Football Scores Explained: Half-Time, 90 Minutes, Extra Time and Penalties

Use a knockout match example to tell the half-time score, the score at 90 minutes and the result after extra time or penalties apart.

Does the score at 90 minutes include stoppage time?

Yes. Regulation time normally consists of two 45-minute halves plus the time added in each half. The score at 90 minutes counts the goals at the end of regulation time, with the home team normally listed first.

What do I record if it ends 2–2 and 4–3 on penalties?

Suppose it is 1–0 at half-time, 2–2 at 90 minutes and still 2–2 after extra time. The home side wins the shootout 4–3 and advances. The regulation score is 2–2 and the shootout score is recorded separately. Even if extra time ends 3–2, the regulation score is still 2–2.

Which date does a result appear under?

We group matches by kickoff date in Beijing time. A Sunday 23:45 kickoff belongs to Sunday even if the match ends on Monday. The results page labels matches decided in extra time or on penalties and shows when the score at 90 minutes is unavailable.
